Why this set and not a single page

Both orientations, and not by stretching one. A flow reads left to right on a slide and top to bottom on a written procedure. Both are drawn, so the diagram you paste into a report was designed for a portrait page rather than squashed onto one.

The step counts already drawn. Four, six and eight steps; one fork, a two-level tree, two sequential gates. A five-step template is no use to an eight-step process, and adding a box by hand is exactly what pulls the arrows off the blocks.

Connectors that survive being moved. Every link is horizontal or vertical – no diagonals, no grouped artwork. Move a block and you drag one straight line to match, instead of rebuilding a slope that no longer touches anything.

One shape vocabulary, explained on the page. Pill for start and end, rectangle for an action, diamond for a decision – with a key in the corner of every working layout and a full reference page that says what each shape means and how to label it. Mixed shapes and uneven gaps are what make a diagram look like clutter.

Swimlanes, for when the handover is the point. Three lanes and four, with the path crossing between them. The only layout that answers ‘whose desk is this on now’, which a single column of boxes cannot.

The rework loop, drawn properly. Every real procedure sends work back when it fails a check, and almost no template includes that arrow – so people bolt one on by hand and it never quite lines up. Here it is part of the layout.
